Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics at Tbilisi State Medical University (www.tsmu.edu) was founded in 2006 with the initiative of Prof. Elene Abzianidze. Students’ Scientific Society “FBG” (Future Belongs to Genetics) was also founded in the department; 23 students scientific conferences and open debates as well as several charity events were organized by the department and FBG.
In 2014, with the initiative of the department’s academic staff, Georgian Society of Medical Genetics and Epigenetics (GSMGE) (www.geneticsgeorgia.org) was founded; Students’ scientific club “FBG” was merged with the Society. Since 2016 GSMGE has been a member of International Federation of Human Genetics Societies ( IFHGS).
Research Laboratory of Molecular Genetics and Epigenetics was established in 2014 by the effort of Prof. E. Abzianidze and Associate Prof. E. Kvaratskhelia in the Department. Several Scientific and PhD programs are being carried out in the lab.
Since 2014, Georgian essay contest dedicated to the DNA Day (April 25), organized by the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics and Georgian Society of Medical Genetics and Epigenetics, with the participation of students in the biomedical field from Georgian universities;
2016 – First accredited conference “Medical Genetics and Epigenetics in Precision Medicine: from Mechanisms to Treatment”
During these years, several text books were translated and published, including “Thompson and Thompson Genetics in Medicine” (2007, 2016), Nessa Carey’s “Epigenetic Revolution” (2014), and etc.
