The Department of Foreign Languages was established in 1930. It was aimed to teach Russian, Latin, German, English and French languages.
The first head of the Department was Professor Simon Kaukhchishvili (1930-1936). In 1936-1938 the Department was led by Associated Professor Alexandr Mdivani.
In 1938, the Department of Languages was divided into the sub-departments of Russian, Latin and Foreign Languages, which were led by Senior Teachers - Konstantine Naneishvili, Giorgi Atanelishvili and Ana Ivanishvili, respectively. In 1943 reintegration of sub-departments was undertaken and professor Giorgi Atanelishvili was appointed as a head of the department.He led the department for 31 years.
In 1974 the Department of Russian Language was separated from the Foreign Language Department, and was led by Assocciated professor Irakli Khoperia, while Assocciated professor Tsiala Bichinashvili was assigned as a Head of Foreign Language Department.
In 1985 Department of Latin Language was separated from the Department of Foreign Languages and Assocciated Professor Nodar Gaprindashvili was appointed as a Head of Latin Language Department. In 1993, Russian and Latin Language Departments were joined with the Foreign Language Department again and Professor Manana Kutelia was assigned as a head of the Integrated Department. She was the Head of the Center (Department) for 22 years. In 1995, the secondary Faculty of Foreign Languages(English, German, French),which was fully self-financed, was created on the basis of Foreign Language Department. The training programme of the faculty was devoted to upgrading the professional skills of medical students as translator-interpreters. The faculty functioned until 2005. In 2005, after reorganization of TSMU structural units, the Foreign Language Department was transformed into the Foreign Language Center.
The activities of the Foreign Languages Center staff were constantly directed towards the improvement of the educational process, and the development and issuing of appropriate textbooks, dictionaries and methodical guidlines for students of higher medical schools. This activities have always been successful and are still in progress.
