The fundamental changes in health care and the complexity of health problems have radically changed the role of nurses / midwifes in the health care system and mounted different challenges in terms of their professional development.
Modern nursing is considered to be a science and art. It requires research and evidence-based practice, the specific nature and skills of humanitarian, physical, biological, behavioral sciences, basic elements of management, leadership and pedagogy (WHO 1996a).
For the first time in Georgia in 2007 a professional higher education program provider - Higher Nursing School was established at Tbilisi State Medical University. At the same year it was incorporated into the newly created faculty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and still remains its structural unit.
In 2007-2010 only professional educational programs were implemented at Tbilisi State Medical University. Since 2011 the four-year Bachelor's Degree of Nursing (nurse and midwife) has been enacted.
The four-year Bachelor's Degree Programs for Nursing and Midwifery were based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization for the European strategy of Nursing and Midwifery (WHO European Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery Education).
Since 2015 we have received the first stream of students in the Georgian-Austrian Bachelor's Program in Nursing, which has been created with the partnerships of Tirol clinics union (Innsbruck, Austria).
Sins 2022 at Tbilisi State Medical University, Nursing and Midwifery Bachelor programs are implemented according with the "National Qualifications Framework" and the "Study Fields Classifier".
