100th anniversary of Professor Baadur Rachvelishvili

The 100th anniversary of Professor Baadur Rachvelishvili was commemorated at Tbilisi State Medical University. Professor Baadur Rachvelishvili was a clinician, professional gastroenterologist, a researcher of History of Georgian Medicine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Academician of the Georgian Academy of Medical Sciences, President of the Georgian Association of Gastroenterologists. He was awarded the Order of Honor twice. 

Baadur Rachvelishvili was born in 1922. His father was fighting against the Red Army. Consequently, he was persecuted by the Bolsheviks. In 1937 Baadur’s father was finally imprisoned and Baadur and his mother announced as a public enemy. Baadur was secretly baptized by Patriarch Kalistrate Tsintsadze. His father’s friends Konstantine Gamsakhurdia, Ivane Javakhishvili, Shalva Nutsubidze, Vakhtang Kotetishvili, Simon Janashia, Pavle Ingorokva, Solomon Khutsishvili and Alexandre Kutateli influenced on the formation of young Baadur’s personality traits. 

Baadur Rachvelishvili was studying in the Faculty of History at Tbilisi State University but changed his mind and a year later continued education in the Faculty of Medicine. In 1944 he graduated from the university and became a doctor in the Region of Khulo. He was a therapist, pediatrician, a surgeon and even an obstetrician. 

In 1950-1960 Baadur worked at the Department of Therapy of the Central Republican Hospital. After the defense of the dissertation, he became an assistant, associate professor and a professor at the Department of Therapy of the Tbilisi State Medical University. 

Professor Baadur Rachvelishvili was the author and co-author of more than 160 publications and 10 monographs. Professor’s anniversary is an important event for the Tbilisi State Medical University to commemorate his merit and prominent professional life.
