Solemn Event Dedicated to the Beginning of New 2019-2020 Academic Year

September 23 was a special day for the academic and administrative staff and students of Tbilisi State Medical University. The solemn event dedicated to the beginning of the new academic year was opened by the National Hymn of Georgia. TSMU administration, representatives of legislative and executive authorities of Georgian Government and invited professors from the Universities of Austria, Germany, France, Romania and the USA congratulated the beginning of the new academic life to TSMU first semester students. According to the results of the National Assessment and Examinations Center (NAEC) the most motivated and high-performing students choose to study at Tbilisi State Medical University. Data collected by NAEC revealed, TSMU is the leader Medical Higher Education Institution in every direction of medical programs among Georgian Medical Universities according to the students’ enrollment rate.

Professor Zurab Vadachkoria, TSMU Rector congratulated the first semester students with the beginning of 2019-2020 academic year and noted, TSMU is the leader Medical University in Georgia. It has successfully completed authorization process and is preparing to obtain International Accreditation. It is notable, AMEE International Regional Center, the third official Center for Medical Education was opened at TSMU on May 23. The TSMU Rector talked about the perspectives and opportunities TSMU gives to its students to become a competitive professional on the local and international labour market. Tbilisi State Medical University has a rich history and includes various proud facts. Prof. Vadachkoria remembered those TSMU students who were tragically killed at the War of Abkhazia and the memorial which will be finally completed on September 27 in the yard of the university. 

Archil Talakvadze, the Chairman of Parliament of Georgia congratulated the beginning of the new academic year to students and professors of Tbilisi State Medical University and noted, TSMU is the example of a great success that has been achieved. “Tbilisi State Medical University is the leader Higher Education Institution in Medical Education. We have decided to spend 25% of the state budget on the development of education”.

Akaki Zoidze, the Head of Healthcare and Social Issues Committee of Parliament of Georgia stated that 29 years ago he himself was the TSMU student and noted how important the professionalism in medicine is.

Amiran Gamkrelidze, Director of the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC), Radu Liviu Horumba Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Romania to Georgia, Prof. Sophie Silvester, Director of “UniMan” Academy of Management and Performance (Grenoble, France), Mariana Hrytsiuk, Doctor of Medicine Sciences, Vice-Rector of International Relations, Bukovinian State Medical University (Chernivtsi, Ukraine), Prof. Wolfgang Buchberger, Head of Institute of Quality and Efficiency in Medicine Department of Public Health, Health Services Research and HTA UMIT - Private University for Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Technology (Austria), Prof. John Williams, Associate Dean Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Life Sciences; Head of Chester Medical School, University of Chester (UK), Prof. Gordon Churchward, Assistant Dean of Medical Education and Student Affairs of  Emory University School of Medicine, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology (USA) , Andro Katcharava, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, Honorary Doctor of TSMU George Grigolia, , Senior Doctor of Surgery Department, Clinic Furstenfeldbruck Academic Hospital of LMU, Prof. Nikoloz Gongadze, Head of Department of Medical Pharmacology, Haithav Dava, the 7th semester international student of International Medicine Faculty congratulated the first semester students with the beginning of the new academic year.

Ana Kakabadze, the President of TSMU Student Self-Government invited ten first semester students having the highest scores and awarded with memorable prizes. Liza Lomtatidze, who had gained the highest scores at the Unified National Examinations was granted with laptop by the TSMU Rector.

At the end of the solemn event the first semester students were met by Prof. Tinatin Chikovani, Dean of Medicine Faculty, Prof. Samson Mghebrishvili, Dean of Stomatology Faculty, Prof. Dali Berashvili, Dean of Pharmacy Faculty, Prof. Irakli Mtechedlishvili, Dean of Faculty of Public Health, Prof, Lela Maskhulia, Dean of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Faculty and Medea Jgharkava, Coordinator of Professional Programs of TSMU. They talked about the programs and answered the questions asked by the students. 

TSMU Folk Song and Dance Ensembles “Vega” and “Deka” performed Georgian Folk songs. Classical and Popular songs were also performed for the guests.
