Tbilisi State Medical University has earned another significant international distinction, becoming an AMEE Regional Centre of Excellence. The announcement was made by Anne Lloyd, AMEE Chief Executive Officer, during the opening ceremony of AMEE 2026 in Vienna.

The designation of TSMU as a Regional Centre of Excellence marks an important milestone for both Tbilisi State Medical University and the development of medical education in Georgia and the wider region. The status reflects the University’s longstanding and consistent efforts, extensive international collaboration and strong commitment to advancing medical education.

Significantly, TSMU is the first AMEE Regional Centre of Excellence in Europe, following the establishment of the first such Centre in China.

TSMU was granted this status in recognition of its longstanding and active collaboration with AMEE, its contribution to the modernization of medical education, the implementation of contemporary approaches to teaching, learning and assessment, and its successful participation in international educational projects.

TSMU’s collaboration with the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) dates back many years and took a significant step forward in 2019 with the establishment of the AMEE International Networking Centre at TSMU. The Centre has evolved from a platform for international cooperation into a sustainable hub for academic development, educational innovation, and the advancement of regional capacity. For more than seven years, it has actively contributed to the development of medical education across Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus, focusing on the dissemination of contemporary educational methodologies, delivery of thematic training programmes, and professional development of academic staff.

Through AMEE educational programmes, international partnerships, training initiatives, conferences, and professional development activities, the Centre has provided hundreds of educators with opportunities for professional development and significantly strengthened links between Georgian educational institutions and the international medical education community.

The Centre’s activities have contributed to the adoption of modern approaches to teaching, learning and assessment, the advancement of competency-based medical education, faculty development, and the enhancement of educational quality.

Today, the Centre’s activities have expanded considerably, fostering collaboration not only among institutions across Georgia but also at regional and international levels.
