Retraining of medical staff within the program of social support for the country's internally displaced persons

Retraining of medical staff within the program of social support for the country's internally displaced persons (IDPs) was held at Tbilisi State Medical University. In June - July, 2018, Tbilisi State Medical University participated and won 2 biddings for retraining of medical staff announced by Ministry of Social Affairs of Abkhazia.  The continuing medical education programs: "Common acute and chronic problems in Primary care practice" (duration 24 days) and " Emergency medical care training”(duration 12 days)  accredited by  the Professional Development Council at the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, won the tender. 23 leading professors and teachers of Tbilisi State Medical University were involved in the event. The training, arranged at the first university clinic and affiliated clinics of TSMU, was focused on theoretical and practical skills. 60 doctors distributed into 6 training groups, passed the training courses.  At the beginning the participants passed pre-test and after completion of the courses – final-test, respectively. Particularly impressive was the practice - "emergency medical assistance" conducted on the basis of TSMU Clinical Skills Center. According to Associate Professor Zaza Bokhua, Director of TSMU Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Continuous Professional Development, all trainees successfully passed testing and practical examination. However, the biggest achievement of the project is development of personal and collegial relationships between the TSMU professors and their colleagues living in the occupied territories of Abkhazia. Following these trainings, several calls have been made from the occupied territories, followed by distance consultations for emergency situations, provided by Georgian physicians. “Experience of joint successful work of the past months is a prerequisite for deepening collaboration. Collaboration developed between the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of A/R Abkhazia and Tbilisi State Medical University will be effective and productive in the future and hopefully it will be confirmed by a number of joint projects. The basis for development of medical personnel retraining project was increased access to quality health care services of Georgian citizens living in the occupied territories. Nearly twenty medical facilities are functioning in the occupied region of Gali, where around 300 medical personnel are employed. I am very delighted that Tbilisi State Medical University won the tender" - said Associated Professor Zaza Bokhua. “I do hope that we will have fruitful cooperation with this traditional academic institution" - said Ketevan Bakaradze, Minister of Health and Social Affairs of A/R Abkhazia.”
