25th Anniversary of Antirabial Medical Assistance Center

Tbilisi State Medical University G. Zhvania Pediatric Academic Clinic Antirabial Medical Assistance Center has been operating successfully for 25 years. The story of Antirabial Medical Assistance Center started in 1996 when 21 people died of rabies in Georgia.

The first Antirabial Medical Assistance Center was created in Tbilisi №2 Child Multifunctional Hospital (now TSMU G. Zhvania Pediatric Academic Clinic) by the chief Rabiologist, Doctor of Medicine and Professor, Teimuraz Gogidze.  Dr. Gogidze highlighted that the center has become a leading service in the fight against rabies across the country.

A significant reduction of rabies cases in Georgia is the result of Dr. Teimuraz Gogidze’s work. Guideline/national recommendation for clinical practice was reviewed by the Center in 2014. Scientific publications on rabies, tetanus and their prevention, information campaigns via media have raised people’s awareness about rabies. Consequently, the number of applications increased, which was reflected in the results. The number of deaths due to hydrophobia has decreased 5 times in Georgia, and during 3 years (2015-2017) no cases of rabies have been reported.
