Joint Project of Japan, the Netherlands, and Georgia on the Organ Transplantation



Tbilisi State Medical University made an another important step toward the goal - to become a leader not only in Georgia but also in the Caucasus region  as a whole and be closer to the level of education in developed countries. It is talked of development of transplantation in Georgia.

Tbilisi State Medical University and its partner clinics - "High Technology Medical Center, University Clinic", Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and Nagasaki University Clinic (Japan) will jointly implement this important project. This project will not be limited to only surgical operations; it will include a number of interesting and useful offers for TSMU students, professional doctors and patients as well. On October 6, 2014,  Professor Mitsuhisa Takatsuki (Nagasaki University Clinic, Japan), TSMU invited Professor Koba Kupreishvili (Erasmus University Clinic, The Netherlands), Professor Gocha Ingorokva, General Director of  "High Technology Medical Center, University clinic” and Professor Baadur Mosidze, General Director of K. Eristavi Experimental And Clinical Surgery Institute visited Tbilisi State Medical University to discuss project details and future plans. The visitors met with TSMU Rector, Professor Zurab Vadachkoria, Chancellor Zurab Orjonikidze, Head of the Department of International Affairs, Prof. Ia Avaliani. They discussed the development of liver transplantation in Georgia. According to Professor Baadur Mosidze, Nagasaki University Clinic has the experience of establishment and running the transplantation Centers in developing countries. The five-year program will be implemented through joint efforts of the parties, which will be the basis for development of multiorgan transplantation  in Georgia in the future.

The first surgery - liver transplantation will be performed by the end of September.  Professor Gocha Ingorokva spoke about the importance of this project for the country and for each individual patient.  According to Koba Kupreishvili the Erasmus University Clinic performed huge work for implementation of this project and is ready to assist the country in this direction. Professor Zurab Vadachkoria also emphasized that all projects that will serve to develop high-level professionals are important and priority for Tbilisi State Medical University and University will do its best to implement the project successfully.
