Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in Obstetrics and Gynecology

On February 11-12, 2014 Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) was held in Obstetrics and Gynecology for the IV year students of the Faculty of Medicine of TSMU.  For the first time a well-organized examination of international level was held at TSMU Faculty of Medicine that was highly appreciated by both students and academic staff.

276 students passed the OSCE exam in Obstetrics - Gynecology for two days. They were divided into four groups. Each student of every group answered the same question. A mark sheet was prepared for every examiner separately. Each student was assigned a number and his/her identity was confirmed after summarizing the results. According to the students it was the most objective and high -level exam.

According to Prof. Thnatin Chikovani, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) – means examination of the competency of future doctors in terms of knowledge and communication / clinical skills.

“Since 2008-2009, clinical exams have been conducted at TSMU Department of Propedeutics but objective structuring of the examination was of great importance. This project has been worked on for many years. With the support of such international organizations as USAID,  JSI (John Snow Institute)  and WHO (World Health Organization), the staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology passed the trainings and on the base of international experience appropriate program  and studying materials has been developed  - said Prof. Tinatin Chikovani – this is the exam with international standard, but before you come so far, studying  should be conducted at the international level ... This is the main goal and  the result of great effort of TSMU"

Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) held at TSMU was observed by Prof. Babill Stray Pederson, WHO expert, Oslo University Professor. He highly praised this precedent. He was very pleased that the Tbilisi State Medical University managed conducting OSCE exam at the highest level.

He added that the students are passing the theoretical and practical examination, examiners assess their knowledge, observe their skills, how to plan and carry out patient care and how to communicate with them. It's a great work.

Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a new and very objective form of examination which was implemented by Prof. Babill Stray Pederson at Oslo University.

The group from TSMU was acquainted with Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) at Oslo University in Norway.  Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)  was conducted at TSMU  Center of Clinical Skills. This was the base where TSMU students were acquainted with a part of  practical skills for passing this exam.

Irma Manjavidze – Director of TSMU Clinical Skills  was one of the organizers of this examination. According to her it was impossible to implement Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in Obstetrics and Gynecology without the great support of the Rector of Tbilisi State Medical University, Administration staff, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and NGOs. It is very expensive exam. Preparation was started in September. Detailed instructions were elaborated in December.

Everyone knew their functions. Students were explained all the rules, answers on frequently asked questions were printed in advance as well.

In agreement with Nikoloz Kintraia the consultation tables were prepared in advance. It was preceded by piloting which was attended by the foreign experts as well. Even the most well- organized tests needs further understanding and improvement. We are working on this way.
