Winter School in Physics - Important to the Students and the Country

"Winter School in Physics” on the theme -  “The physical principles for diagnostic methods and medical devices", organized on  the base of Department of Medical Physics and Biophysics of Tbilisi State Medical University, was  funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. In the project participated TSMU academic staff  Prof. Tamar Sanikidze, Ramin Antia (invited teacher), Giorgi Ormotsadze (invited teacher, Head of the Department of Radiation Safety Problems at I.Beritashvili Center of Experimental Biomedicine), Salome Kiparoidze (invited teacher), Vakhtang Tsertsvadze (invited teacher, Diagnostical-Research Center, Todual Clinic Medical Physicist ) and foreign invited specialists: Prof. Nicolas Pallikarakis (Department of Medical Physics, Patras University, Greece), Prof. Darel Fisher (President, Health Physics Society, USA), Prof. Martyna Elas (Professor, Department of Biophysics, Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland),

On February 20, 2014, the meeting, within the project - " Winter School in Physics ", was held.  Participating students from Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi and Telavi Universities were welcomed by Professor Tamar Sanikidze, the author of the project.  According to Professor Tamar Sanikidze, together with nuclear and radiation medicine, the development of security systems are of great importance. This is the future of medicine.

That's why the world-class specialists have been invited to Georgia for introduction the modern scientific works, achievements in medical technologies and perspectives of their application to TSMU students. According to Prof.Rima Beriashvili, Vice-Rector of TSMU, nuclear physics and high technologies play a great role in development of medical sciences. The students, participating today in this project belong to the generation which will play a big role in the development of medicine and medical technology. We are delighted that this project will be realized by TSMU as the author of the winner project. We Georgians believe that the birthplace ოფ academic medicine is ინ Georgia, the homeland of Medea of Colchis . This is another motivation to do our best for development of medicine in Georgia. TSMU makes every effort to support professional development of future physicians . Therefore  its  reputation is growing every day. 1926 students  from 38 countries are studying at Tbilisi State Medical University. We are pleased that the University cooperates with Beritashvili Scientific - Research Institute of Physiology. Prof.Rima Beriashvili expressed thankfulness to TSMU staff, invited guests, TSMU students and academic staff for their work. Today, it is transitive period when the scientific works and experiences of fundamental sciences are most in need for development of medicine. According to the World Health Organization the next 50 years will be devoted to the improvement of medical technology, trade, nuclear and radiation safety. According to Davit Nadareishvili, director of Beritashvili Scientific - Research Institute of Physiology realization of such projects are of great importance for Georgia. Medical visualization is the key support for diagnostics; therefore improvement of technologies, their study and safety is a priority issue for the country.

The meeting was attended by: Archil Kapanadze, Ex-President of Health Physics, Vice-President of Association of Medical Physicists, Vice-President of Radial Oncology Association. He talked about the significance of “Winter School” and the actuality of the theme “The physical principles for diagnostic methods and medical devices”, Lecture - seminars, which has great meaning  not only for students but also for professionals . In 1964, according to the order, issued by the Minister of Health of the USSR, the number of radiological examinations of all registered  patients should be placed on the card, the need was obvious. Then there was an nuclear explosion and radiological examinations were no longer topical issue. In 2010-2012, in the United States  radiological examinations of the patients had to be registered. Thus it is important theme of these days, discussing at TSMU.

First of all, the doctor should be informed and well-educated in this direction. Students’ awareness in this direction is a matter of great importance. The speeches were reported by: Prof. Nicolas Pallikarakis, Prof. Darel Fisher and Prof. Martyna Elas. All three said that they were very satisfied with the students' interest, high academic records, the fact that TSMU succeeded in organizing these important workshops. They presented to the audience the latest scientific works and noted that this event was not only a matter of students, but also the country as well due to their importance.
