On October 17, 2024, Tbilisi State Medical University hosted Professor Eric Vermetten, Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Leiden University Medical Center (Netherlands). The professor delivered a public lecture: "Transforming PTSD Care: Innovative Approaches and Incentives for Research and Clinical Care".
Professor Irakli Natriashvili, Rector of TSMU officially awarded Professor Eric Vermetten with the title of Honorary Doctor of TSMU. This honorary degree was granted to Professor Vermetten by the decision of TSMU's Academic Council on September 20, 2024.
“Tbilisi State Medical University has a long-term partnership with Leiden University and Professor Eric Vermetten. I am sure this partnership will be strengthened and developed in the future," stated Professor Irakli Natriashvili.
During the lecture, Professor Vermetten introduced students, residents and the audience to one of the major challenges in mental and behavioral disorders: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He discussed the innovative approaches and research advances in addressing this complex condition.
"Taking care of the overall mental state of the population is an integral part of societal well-being. A society made up of mentally healthy individuals is more productive and successful. In recent years, mental health has become an increasingly important issue, largely due to the stressful pace of life, rapidly changing environments, and ongoing conflicts. Therefore, understanding mental health and its impact on our lives is of utmost importance," noted Professor Eric Vermetten.
Professor described various clinical cases and presented intriguing and unique audio and visual materials gathered from his practical work around the world. These presentations sparked great interest and captured the attention of the audience.
