TSMU’s Role in Global
Medical Education
For Tbilisi State Medical
University, this international conference represents a strategically
significant event, emphasizing the university’s role not only nationally, but
also regionally and globally. It also underlines Georgia’s growing potential to
become a regional hub for educational innovation in medical education.
TSMU Rector Professor
Irakli Natroshvili noted: “This conference is a new stage in the development of
medical education in Georgia and further highlights TSMU’s expanding role in
the international academic space.
I am proud that our university, the flagship of higher medical education in
Georgia — is the organizer of this important event.
The conference will feature prominent international speakers from the United
Kingdom, Portugal, Germany and other European countries, as well as the United
States, alongside Georgian experts with long-standing involvement in higher
medical education.
Medical education has changed significantly in recent years, particularly in
teaching and assessment methods. Increasing emphasis is placed on clinical
experience–based learning and evaluation.
Since young doctors work directly with patients after graduation, it is
essential that they possess the practical skills needed to provide competent
care.
Sharing new approaches and exchanging experiences are therefore of great value
not only for TSMU, but for all accredited medical higher education institutions
in Georgia.
I am confident that this conference will be a valuable and impactful event for
the entire Georgian medical community.”
Conference Objectives
The main goals of the
International Conference on Medical Education are to:
- Discuss modern approaches to
teaching, assessment, and clinical practice with international experts.
- Strengthen cooperation between
Georgian and foreign professionals through the exchange of experiences,
innovations, and best practices.
- Promote quality enhancement and
strategic development of medical education for sustainable progress.
- Integrate principles of social
accountability and sustainability into medical education.
- Assess the impact of globalization on
medical education standards, accreditation, ethics, and student
well-being, helping participants understand global trends and their local
implications.
Associate Professor Nona
Janikashvili, who will discuss transforming medical education ideas into
effective projects stated: “This conference provides an excellent collaborative
platform for physicians, students, researchers, higher education specialists,
and policymakers — both from Georgia and abroad.
The program includes workshops, panel discussions, and poster presentations,
creating a rich environment for sharing experiences and turning new ideas into
practice.
It is an important step toward developing an innovative, need-based, and
unified medical education system. I personally look forward to presenting how
educational ideas can be transformed into effective projects.”
Participation of
International Experts
The conference at TSMU
will bring together leading global experts in medical education, establishing a
unified platform for knowledge sharing and international cooperation.
Speakers emphasize that
the event will also help integrate Georgian professionals into international
academic and scientific networks, allowing them to explore global trends, align
local practices with international standards, and identify new opportunities to
improve student learning, research, and clinical training quality.
Professor Harm Peters,
President of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), described the
event as a significant milestone:
“It is a great honor, as
President of AMSE, to recognize the importance of the upcoming International
Conference on Medical Education in Tbilisi.
This event will bring together leaders, educators, and innovators from around
the world to share their expertise and experiences. Most importantly, it
provides an opportunity to discuss the future of medical education amid global
challenges. In times of global change, international collaboration in medical
education is not only valuable but essential to ensure that future generations
of doctors are fully prepared to meet the healthcare needs of our patients and
societies.
I look forward to our discussions and exchanges — see you at the International
Conference on Medical Education at Tbilisi State Medical University.”
Among the distinguished
speakers is Professor Douglas Ander, Assistant Dean at the Emory University
School of Medicine (USA), who will present on educational scholarship,
innovation, and the dissemination of academic work: “I eagerly look forward to
visiting Tbilisi, your beautiful country, and TSMU.
My presentation will focus on the importance of educational scholarship and
dissemination — a critical aspect as we innovate in curricula and develop new
teaching techniques.
Disseminating these results is essential both nationally and internationally.
In recent years, TSMU has undergone remarkable changes, and it is vital to
learn how to transform our work into scholarly products — presenting at
conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. I am looking forward to
the conference, your hospitality, and my visit to Tbilisi.”
