On April 2, Tbilisi State Medical University joined the global community in observing World Autism Awareness Day. The event aimed to raise public awareness about autism spectrum disorders and highlight both their medical and social significance.
The event was opened by Professor Irakli Natrosvili, Rector of TSMU who emphasized the importance of societal engagement in addressing autism. He noted that raising awareness plays a critical role in timely and accurate diagnosis and stressed the significance of early intervention and professional support, which help individuals with autism spectrum disorders achieve better development and full integration into society.
The keynote speaker was Professor Sophia Bakhtadze, TSMU Vice-Rector. Professor Sophia Bakhtadze provided attendees with comprehensive information on autism, presenting current statistics and key facts to deepen understanding of the condition.
World Autism Awareness Day was established by the United Nations on December 18, 2007, to promote public awareness, protect the fundamental rights of people with autism, and support their inclusion in society.
The TSMU event was organized by the Student Self-Government and attended by both students and academic staff, reflecting the University’s active commitment to fostering societal awareness and creating an inclusive environment.
