A summer camp for children with diabetes is being held this year as well, organized by the international humanitarian organization “Ex Georgia,” Tbilisi State Medical University, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. Prior to departure for Lagodekhi on June 22, camp participants traditionally gathered at TSMU, where they were hosted by Professor Irakli Natroshvili, Rector of TSMU.
“Welcoming the participants, Rector Professor Irakli Natroshvili emphasized the importance of TSMU’s continued involvement in supporting adolescents with diabetes:
“TSMU’s active engagement and multifaceted support in this direction are of particular importance. It is essential to help adolescents gain in-depth medical knowledge on managing their condition, which enables them to lead independent and fulfilling lives. Alongside the educational component, physical activity and socialization are equally important. Participation in the sports and wellness activities planned within the camp will further contribute to this process.”
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, Tea Giorgadze, who expressed her support for the participants and wished them a productive and enriching camp experience. Participants were also addressed by the Vice-President of “Ex Georgia,” Guram Amiridze, who presented a brief overview of the camp’s history and development.
The camp program is specifically designed for children with diabetes and includes:
• Four balanced meals per day
• Regular physical activity and sports engagement
• Blood glucose monitoring three times daily
• Educational and awareness-raising training sessions
• Support for developing a structured and healthy daily routine
The program aims to strengthen both medical self-management skills and psychosocial well-being among adolescents.
The American program has been implemented since 1995. For three decades, the organizers have successfully run medical, educational, and sports-rehabilitation camps in Georgia for adolescents aged 12–17. This year, the camp will run from 21 to 29 June and will involve 35 children.
