In Memory of Professor Rema Gvamichava

The academic community, administration, students, researchers and residents of Tbilisi State Medical University express their deepest condolences on the passing of Professor Rema Gvamichava.

Professor Rema Gvamichava was Head of the TSMU Department of Oncology, a member of the TSMU Academic Council, and Director of the Center for Radiation and Nuclear Medicine. He also served on the Expert Council of the European School of Oncology and was Founder and Chair of the Board of the Oncology Prevention Center. He was a Laureate of the National Award for Cancer Prevention (2011), a recipient of the Order of Honor (2012), and an Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Georgia. 

Professor Rema Gvamichava devoted his professional and academic career to the advancement of oncology in Georgia. His work played an important role in the development of oncological surgery, cancer prevention, screening, and the national population-based cancer registry. He was also actively involved in international research and educational projects and contributed significantly to the international recognition of Georgian oncology.

Since 1994, his professional and academic career had been closely associated with his alma mater, where he progressed from Assistant to Associate Professor and ultimately Professor and Head of the Department of Oncology. A distinguished clinician, researcher, educator and medical administrator, Professor Rema Gvamichava authored two textbooks, three monographs, methodological guidelines and more than 100 scientific publications, many of them published in leading international journals.

Beyond his professional achievements, he will be remembered for his humanity, empathy, collegiality, reliability and dedication to his students, colleagues and patients. His contribution to TSMU and to the development of oncology in Georgia represents an important legacy.

Professor Rema Gvamichava will be deeply missed by the TSMU academic community, colleagues, students and future generations of medical professionals.
