Staff members of the M. Shengelia Museum of the History of Georgian Medicine at Tbilisi State Medical University participated in a scientific expedition conducted as part of an ongoing research project on the history of population genetics.
The expedition was led by the Museum's Director, Professor Ramaz Shengelia, together with museum researchers Ekaterine Machitidze, Levan Jojua, and Lia Bezarashvili. The research team visited six municipalities in western Georgia to collect materials for the study.
The expedition was carried out in collaboration with Professor Theodore Schurr of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and Professor Aram Yardman of the Department of History and Social Sciences at Bryn Athyn College, Pennsylvania.
During the fieldwork, approximately 300 biological samples were collected for laboratory analysis. These samples will be processed and compared with data previously collected from other regions of Georgia.
The project aims to advance research into the genetic history of Georgia's population and provide new insights into the country's population dynamics and historical genetic processes.
