The objective of the Foreign Languages Center is focused on practical aspects of foreign language teaching (English, Latin, German, French, Russian) in compliance with the TSMU curriculum, which implies incorporation of language-related skills, competences and content area knowledge, and is designed to meet specific needs of medical students according to particular disciplines and activities centered on the language appropriate to those activities in syntax, text, discourse, semantics, etc., and analysis of the discourse. It is based on medical student empowerment to get information, develop cognitive and strategic competences, on the basis of the formation of a critical attitude.
The Chair of Foreign Languages was established in 1930. The main objective of the chair was teaching of Russian, Latin, English, German, French languages.
The first head of the department was Professor Simon Kaukhchishvili (1930-1936). In 1936-1938, the chair was headed by the Docent Alexandre Mdivani.
In 1938, the Department of Languages was divided into Russian, Latin and foreign language sections, which were respectively headed by: senior teachers - Konstantine Naneishvili, Giorgi Atanelishvili, Ana Ivanishvili.
In 1943, the divided sections were rejoined into the Chair of Foreign Languages, and Giorgi Atanelishvili was appointed as its head. He headed the chair for 31 years.
In 1974, the Department of Russian Language was separated from the Chair of Foreign Languages and was headed by the Docent Irakli Khoperia, and Docent Tsiala Bichinashvili was appointed as the head of the Chair of Foreign Languages.
In 1985, the Chair of Latin Language was separated from the Chair of Foreign Languages and Associate Professor Nodar Gaprindashvili was appointed as its head. Docent Tsiala Bichinashvili was appointed as the head of the Department of Foreign Languages.
In 1993, the Chairs of Russian and Latin Languages joined the Chair of Foreign Languages. Professor Manana Kutelia, who headed the center (chair) for 22 years (until 2015), was appointed as the head of the United Department.
In 1995, a secondary faculty of foreign languages (English, German, French) was established, where medical students obtained the specialty of translator-referent. The faculty functioned until 2005.
In 2005, in connection with the reorganization of the TSMU structural units the Chair of Foreign Languages was modified into Foreign Languages Center.
In 2015-2022, the Center of Foreign Languages was headed by Professor Nino Abralava.

The activities of the staff of the Department of Foreign Languages were constantly directed to the improvement of the educational process,as well as to the development of appropriate textbooks, dictionaries and methodical materials for students of higher medical institutions. This activity was successfully carried out and is still being carried out.
