Within the framework of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (November 17–23), Microbiology Department of Tbilisi State Medical University, in collaboration with local and regional partners, is organizing an “International Regional Conference - Modern Challenges and Global Health issues in Microbiology Focusing on Eastern Europe and The Caucasus Region."
This conference will address pivotal issues in microbiology, encompassing antimicrobial resistance, strategies for pandemic prevention and preparedness, and the exploration of bacteriophages as therapeutic alternatives to conventional antibiotics and other emergent challenges within the field of clinical microbiology , infectious diseases and other fields of medicine connected to microbiology.
Distinguished speakers will include representatives from the World Health Organization in Georgia, Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research- Georgia. The event will also feature contributions from prominent medical and scientific professionals, both domestic and international, with participants from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Romania, Denmark, the United States, and Ukraine.
We are honored to welcome Professor Robert Leo Skov, President of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), who will speak abouth the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance.This conference is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Professor Tamaz Kereselidze, a prominent Georgian microbiologist and public health leader, whose legacy continues to inspire generations of scientists.
Preliminary Schedule:
November 22, 2025 — Oral and poster presentations, keynote speeches, and scientific sessions with the participation of doctors, scientists, and invited experts.
A detailed program will be announced soon. The conference will include keynote lectures, scientific presentations, and discussions covering pressing global and regional microbiology topics.
Registration will be opened in August.

In Honor of Tamaz Kereselidze

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tamaz Kereselidze, a distinguished Georgian microbiologist, physician, and public health leader, whose contributions have left a lasting impact both in Georgia and internationally.
Tamaz Kereselidze graduated from Tbilisi State Medical University in 1948. From 1974 to 1995, he served as the Head of the Department of Microbiology, Virology, and Immunology at the same university.Professor Kereselidze made a significant contribution to the advancement of global health through his collaboration with the World Health Organization. For his active participation in the successful eradication of smallpox in South Asia, he was awarded the prestigious Bifurcation Needle and, together with his working group, was nominated for the Nobel Prize.
Throughout his career, Professor Kereselidze authored over 100 scientific works and was honored with numerous national and international awards. His legacy of scientific excellence and dedication to public health continues to inspire generations of medical professionals.
