Ecological Medicine Perspective in Georgia

On February 22, 2014,  the Scientific-Research Conference on “Perspectives of  Ecological Medicine in Georgia” was held at Tbilisi State Medical University.

According to the speech of Teimuraz Shengelia, one of the organizers of the Conference , a member of the Georgian Society of Ecological Sciences and Head of Human Ecology Institute, the methods of ecological medicine are not new  and over  thousands of years mankind is using these methods for treatment.  But ecological medicine was established as a direction at the beginning of XX century   when Rene Dubos introduced this term for the first time. Civilization, development of economics and modern technologies and urbanization increased the gap and even more estranged the human beings from the world. Modern people are severe from perception of the universe, their ecological ego is depressed. Physicians, theologians, physicists have come to the conclusion that people and Noosphere cannot be considered separately. Diseases, reflected on the physical level, are manifestations  of the processes taking place in the world. Classical methods of Medicine, which moved forward the medicine since the second half of the XX century, can no longer meet the requirements for fighting against pathological changes. Chemical methods, seem not be able to regulate health, while natural methods, even, Phytotherapy can be very effective. We want to rise the issues concerning to ecological medicine and move them forward.

In 2001, the United Nations adopted the alternative complementary medicine program where more than 150 counties are united, but unfortunately not Georgia. We would like to keep up with the current processes and establish a human ecology research - medical center here in Georgia. The conference was very interesting for TSMU students.

According to Associate Professor Marina Giorgobiani at TSMU Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health (direction-Hygiene and medical ecology), President of Medical Hygiene Association, this is a very important event that will maintain and lead to development of ecological medicine in Georgia. At the conference there were discussed the issues important not only for Georgia but for the whole world

as well: Environmental health  and implementation of ecological treatment  and remedies  to maintain

population  health. I suppose that I and my colleagues will contribute to improving the environment and expose our country as the founder of   traditional medicine suggesting  the new approaches  relying on

its old traditions. The Conference is  attended by the undergraduate and postgraduate students, young

specialists and experienced experts … we are working for the next generation to be prepared to deal with the problems and complexities. A new generation is highly educated and motivated to go forward towards professional excellence. This motivation is guarantee for success.
