Summer School in Physics

On August 23-29, 2014,  Summer School in Physics - “Modern trends in medical visualization and patient and staff safety ", organized by the Department of Medical Physics and Biophysics was held at the “Ambassador” Hotel in Kachreti.  

The program was funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and  the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation. On August 26, the opening ceremony was attended by Giorgi Shervashidze Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, Prof. Rima Beriashvili, Vice-Rector of Tbilisi State Medical University, Prof. Tamar Sanikidze, Project coordinator, David Nadareishvili,  Director of Ivane Beritashvili Center Of Experimental Biomedicine, academic personnel of the Department of Medical Physics and Biophysics (Ramin Antia, M.D., Ph.D., Giorgi Ormotsadze M.D., Ph.D., Salome Kiparoidze, doctoral student), Elene Taliashvili, specialist of the Department of Higher Education and Science Development at the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, and invited foreign Professors: Madan Rehani the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, 2005, Secretar of International Commission of Radiological Protection - ICRP, General Director of International Organization for Medical Physics  (Austria); John Damilakis, European Federation of Organisations in Medical Physics (EFOMP) President, University of Crete (Greece), Head of Medical Faculty Department of Medical Physics, Nikolas Palikarakis – TEMPUS program „Bio Medical Engineering Education Tempus Initiative in Eastern Neighbouring Area“ coordinator, Professor of University of Patras (Greece), President of American Academy of Health Physics. In the program participated the students of medical profile from Tbilisi and regional (Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, Akaki Tsereteli State University, Telavi State University) Universities.

On August 27, 2014 within the frames of Summer School, a round table on "Radiation Medicine XXI Century - Opportunities, Challenges” was held at S/R Institute of Clinical Medicine. It was attended by: Academicians Pridon Todua and Giorgi Jasparidze, Nodar Mitagvaria corresponding member of Georgian National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Amiran Gamkrelidze, Director of National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, Prof. Ketevan Kavtiashvili, Deputy Dean of TSMU Faculty of Medicine, Elene Taliashvili, Specialist of the Department of Higher Education and Science Development at the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, Marina Giorgobiani, TSMU Professor, the representatives of I. Beritashvili Center of Experimental Biomedicine, S/R Institute of Clinical Medicine, and National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, the members of the round table organizing committee: (Professor David Nadareishvili, Professor Tamar Sanikidze, George Ormotsadze) and foreign professors:Madan RehaniJohn Damilakis, Nikolas Palikarakis and Darel Fisher.

Leading experts of the field discussed the architecture of radiation protection modern system, the role of education in the modern security system, the way of support from International organizations in building national infrastructure. On August 29, the Summer school was closed. Participating students were awarded the certificates. Foreign guests mentioned high interest of the students and their involvement in the course of the lectures. Participants expressed the desire that such schools in this area should have a permanent character, as it is necessary for any country.
