With the support of Georgian Ministry of Education and Science and National Center for Education Quality Enhancement Professor David Gordon, president of World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), and Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Head of WFME Office, have visited Tbilisi State Medical University.
The goal of the visit was the perspectives of International Accreditation for Medical Education Programs .
On the 6th of April the meeting with Professor David Gordon, president of World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), and Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Head of WFME Office has been held at the Tbilisi State Medical University, At the meeting Mr. Aleksandre Jejelava, Minister of Science and Education and Deputy Prime Minister of Georgia, Mr. Davit Sergeenko, Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia. Tamar Sanikidze, Director of National Center for Education Quality Enhancement, TSMU, Professor Zurab Orjonikidze Acting Rector of TSMU and Vice Rectors: Professor: Irakli Kokhreidze and Professor: Khatuna Todadze, also TSMU Administrative / academic Staff and Invited guests from other Georgian Universities have been represented at the Meeting.
The welcome speech has been held by Tamar Sanikidze, Director of National Center for Education Quality Enhancement, She has mentioned that Georgian Universities already have been started working process to pass the International Accreditation, that will be necessary starting 2023 year. In regards of the accreditation for Medical Education Programs , she has mentioned that it should be done according the standards of WFME. The National Center for Education Quality Enhancement is planning to gain recognition of WFME with the aim to provide International accreditation for Medical education programs .
Mr. Aleksandre Jejelava addressed the participants of meeting and noted that the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia is working closely with many countries in the field of medical education, which is a resulted in advancements in this field. Also he has spoken about the new initiative "Study in Georgia”, which is very important for our country.
Mr. David Sergeenko has spoken about the ancient Georgian medical traditions, The beginning of Georgian History of Medicine is associated with Medea, name of the Kolkhetian ruler's daughter He has mentioned the importance of International accreditation for postgraduate medical Education in Georgia and harmonization of medical Education with EU standards.
After the opening speeches Prof David Gordon, the president of World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) has held presentation on “ World Directory, guidelines, standards, accreditation”. At the end of the meeting Professor answered the questions from the audience.
At the meeting closing remarks were made by prof Zurab Orjonikidze, acting Rector of Tbilisi State Medical University. He has mentioned, that the visit of Prof David Gordon has great importance for the development of Medical Education in Georgia.
