Meeting with Nobel Prize Winner Prof. Aaron Ciechanover

On June 30, 2017, a meeting with Nobel Prize Winner Aaron Ciechanover  was held at Tbilisi State Medical University. The meeting was attended by Academician Revaz Sepiashvili, Honorary Doctor of Tbilisi State Medical University, President of World Immunopathology Organization, Director of Director of the Institute of Immunophysiology, Head of the Department of   Allergology and Immunology, Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, who made a great contribution in organization of the visit of Nobel Prize Winner-scientists  Aaron Ciechanover to Tbilisi State Medical University. The meeting was opened and a short film on the discovery of Professor Aaron Ciechanover was presented to the audience by Prof. Tintin Chikovani, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Tbilisi State Medical University. After presentation of the film, the students of Tbilisi State Medical University organized a dance performance on the scene dedicated to the Ubiquitin System mechanism, for the discovery of which Aaron Ciechanover was awarded  Nobel Prize in 2004. The Nobel Prize was awarded jointly to Aaron Ciechanover, Avram Hershko and Irwin Rose "for the discovery of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation".

 On the basis of this discovery, pharmaceutical companies found ways to create new preparations  against cancer and released second generation - Bortezomib. Therefore Prof. Aaron Chihánverver is considered as a symbol of victory humanity has achieved in fighting against cancer. The drug is effective and can defeat the widespread form of blood disease -multiple myeloma. The honorable guest was addressed by Professor Zurab Vadachkoria, Rector of Tbilisi State Medical University. According to Prof. Zurab Vadachkoria,  it is a great honor for the Tbilisi State Medical University to open the newly reconstructed theater hall with such significant event. Prof. Aaron Ciechanover  is the first Nobel Laureate-scientist, hosted by the Tbilisi State Medical University. According to the decision of the Academic Council of Tbilisi State Medical University, Prof. Aaron Ciechanover   was awarded the title of  honorary doctorate of TSMU and certification  together with the memorable gifts were handed  by the Rector of Tbilisi State Medical University, Professor Zurab Vadachkoria.  Professor Ciechanover gave a warm and cordial speech: -"I am a Doctor, specialized in surgery and worked at different clinics. Later, I realized that I needed something different. I had to leave medical field and then return but through the back door. Entrrance into medical field directly  through the front door means counseling and treating the patients. I wanted more. Returning through the back door, it means changing patient's life. Fortunately, I did it! "  Prof. Aaron Ciechanover   recalled one of the interesting episodes of his life when he received the greatest gift in the world when his invention that still was under clinical trial, survived the dying patient with diagnosis of  multiple myeloma  from the lethal outcome. It was the happiest minutes … I have ever  had. As for the scientific career and professional path of Aaron Ciechanover, the scientist has shared his opinion to the attendees: "I do not have a profession, I have a hobby  to which I dedicated all my life. My hobby is a science!   Do what you love, what's your hobby and you will definitely achieve great success!" The audience several times  expressed respect to Prof Aaron  with a  long ovation.

The guest expressed his gratitude to the Tbilisi State Medical University for awarding the honorary doctorate, saying that this is one of the most important honorary prizes among other ones that have been ever awarded. He also expressed gratitude for the performance. "For the first time in my life I've seen my discovery in dancing and it's interesting and fun. Thank you for this." The meeting ended with a concert arranged by the students’ creative groups of Tbilisi State Medical University. To the end of the meeting Professor Aaron Ciechanover made the record in the TSMU book of impressions.
