Visit of Tbilisi State Medical University delegation to Washington D.C. (USA)

In September 2024, Tbilisi State Medical University delegation: Professor Irakli Natroshvili Rector of TSMU, Aleksandre Buachidze Chancellor of TSMU and Professor Archil Undilashvili Head of the International Relations Department visited Washington, D.C., USA. The representatives of TSMU's administration were invited to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), the largest biomedical research institution in the United States, operating under the U.S. Department of Defense.

The TSMU delegation was hosted by Col. Eli Lozano Commander of the Walter Reed Institute of Research and Col. Nelson Michael Director of the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) at the WRAIR. They provided detailed information about the activities of the research institute, in the U.S. and globally. The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research has a representative office in Georgia (the Lugar Laboratory), which operates in the country.

Professor Irakli Natroshvili and Mr. Aleksandre Buachidze presented a detailed presentation about Tbilisi State Medical University as a leading and top-ranked institution for medical education in the region. Following the presentations, both parties discussed potential collaboration, which would include the utilization of the U.S. WRAIR Georgian branch and TSMU's clinical bases for practical programs aimed at developing clinical research skills for TSMU students. They also explored the possibility of joint educational and research programs in areas such as infection control and prevention, management of antibiotic-resistant infections, and quality control.

Tbilisi State Medical University delegation participated in the Friends of the National Library of Medicine annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. During the event, the representatives of TSMU met with their American colleagues and prominent figures in the field of medicine. The annual Friends of the National Library of Medicine awards ceremony is held to recognize achievements in healthcare and to honor distinguished individuals and organizations. Representatives from the public, professional, and business sectors take part in the event. This year’s awards ceremony honored notable individuals such as Professor Eric Topol Executive Vice President of the scientific organization “Scripps Research”, Nobel laureate and BioNTech consultant, Professor Katalin Karikó BioNTech CEO, Mr. Uğur Şahin and Ms. Özlem Türeci Medical Director.

Emory University organized a reception for the TSMU delegation, as well as representatives from the U.S. Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the U.S. Congressional Science Foundation, and George Washington University at the Cosmos Club in Washington. The aim of the event was introducing attendees to one another and exploring potential collaboration opportunities.
