On September 27, 2024, students, academic and administrative staff of Tbilisi State Medical University, as well as the parents and relatives of fallen heroes: Vasil Kiladze, Ilia Meladze, Giorgi Mirotadze, Revaz Mumladze, and Nikoloz Gibradze gathered in the university yard at the memorial dedicated to the students who heroically died in the War of Abkhazia. TSMU students laid a wreath at the memorial, lit candles, and paid tribute to the memory of the fallen heroes.
Professor Irakli Natriashvili, Rector of Tbilisi State Medical University addressed the audience:
"Today is the day full of sorrow and pain in the history of Georgia. It has been 31 years since we lost our territories. It is especially difficult to speak about the fact that our university’s students, young men, went to fight for the independence of Georgia. I am sure their struggle and sacrifice will not be in vain, and Georgia will once again be united. We are obligated to honor the memory of these individuals." said the TSMU rector.
"Today we are here, but tomorrow we will no longer be, yet we know for certain that in honor of our children, people gather at Tbilisi State Medical University, light candles, and remember them with great respect. This is a very important day for us. When we know that you remember them, read their names on the memorial, and pay tribute to them... it feels as if life continues. We are deeply grateful to Tbilisi State Medical University for this tradition," noted the parents of the students who heroically died in the war.
The students who died in the War of Abkhazia were remembered by Zurab Leshkasheli, a graduate of Tbilisi State Medical University, a veteran of the War of Abkhazia and a writer.
“The parents of the Tbilisi State Medical University students who died in the War of Abkhazia carry a great tragedy on their shoulders, yet they should take immense pride in having raised heroic children for their homeland. The TSMU administration and professors are doing everything to ensure that future generations appreciate the heroism and sacrifice of these young men for Georgia," said Mr. Zurab Leshkasheli during his speech.
Vasil Kiladze, Ilia Meladze, Giorgi Mirotadze, Revaz Mumladze, Nikoloz Gibradze – their names will never be forgotten at Tbilisi State Medical University.
