From September 2 to September 30, 2024, Nina Zoe Becker, a student from the Medical University of Innsbruck (Austria) underwent an internship at the TSMU N 3 Department of Internal Medicine.
According to Nina Zoe Becker, working at the clinic provided her with valuable experience and enhanced her skills significantly.
“During my internship in Georgia, I experienced many differences, such as a new country, different working hours, language barrier and daily clinical routines. All the doctors made a great effort to involve me in the daily clinical activities. They were eager to teach and show me various aspects of medical practice. I spent the first week in the Rheumatology Department, attending patient exams and discussing clinical cases with the doctor. In the Cardiology Department, I had the opportunity to attend lectures for the English program students, where I repeated valuable theoretical knowledge. After the lectures, I was involved in outpatient consultations, during which I was able to apply my skills by performing ECGs myself. The cardiologist also took extra time to thoroughly review these ECGs and discuss detailed cases with me, enhancing my understanding of various cardiac conditions. In the final week I attended lectures, learned about inpatient management and observed various procedures. The doctors translated the most important information into English to help me follow along”.
According to Nina Zoe Becker, in addition to the practical experience gained during her internship, she also acquired significant theoretical knowledge in areas such as physiology, pathophysiology, diagnostics, and treatment.
“I was positively impressed by how friendly and approachable all the doctors were, which made the learning environment very welcoming and supportive. I have gained a better foundation and understanding of rheumatology and cardiology, as well as some examinations. This will especially help me in my internal medicine courses. I am very satisfied with my internship at TSMU and very grateful that I had the opportunity to take part in the exchange program. Besides practice, I was able to get to know Georgia as a country better and was very impressed. I love nature, cuisine and especially people. Therefore, I can highly recommend the students to take the chance to do an internship and visit Georgia” said the international student.
