From September 2 to 30, 2024, within the framework of an exchange program, Magdalena Werle and Rahel Roth, students from the Medical University of Innsbruck (Austria) underwent internship at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the First University Clinic of TSMU.
According to the students, during their stay in Georgia, they became familiar with the medical system, treatment methods, and gained valuable experience from Georgian doctors.
“Overall, it was a great experience to observe the daily clinical routine in a different country. The working hours for us as students started at 10 AM. Everyone made a real effort to include us in the daily operations of the clinic. The day always started with the morning conference, where all the doctors gathered to discuss patient cases and treatment plans. After the conference, we usually accompanied one of the doctors to assist with various tasks. This included monitoring fetal heart rates with CTG, observing gynecological surgeries, or being present during cesarean sections. We also visited the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where we learned about the work of pediatricians and the care provided to newborns. During my internship, we learned how to use specific gynecological instruments and gained insights into the examinations related to the childbirth process. We also understood the step-by-step procedure of a cesarean section. In the second half of the internship, we gained deeper insights into various gynecological surgeries, such as hysteroscopy, hysterectomy, myomectomy, and curettage. Overall, the work process is similar to that in Austria. We would like to emphasize that we highly regard the medical system here, as it adheres to quite a high standard" said the students.
The students noted, the practical experience gained during their internship at the First University Clinic of Tbilisi State Medical University provided a solid foundation for advancing to the next stage of their professional careers.
“We will return to our university in Austria in October to begin our second last year of studies, which will include subjects such as gynecology and obstetrics. The practical experience we gained during our internship in Georgia has given us a solid foundation and understanding. This will allow us to connect our observations with the theoretical knowledge we will learn. Moreover, we will recommend other students to do an internship in Georgia. We are very satisfied with the internship here at TMSU. We are generally very grateful that we had the opportunity to take part in the exchange program. In addition to medical theory and skills, we were able to gain an insight into a different healthcare system and everyday clinical practice. Besides our internship we were impressed by Georgia as a country. We love its nature, cuisine and especially people. Therefore, we can highly recommend students in Austria to take the chance, undergo an internship and visit Georgia” said the students from the Medical University of Innsbruck.
The Austrian students participated in an exchange program at the First University Clinic of TSMU within the framework of agreement signed between TSMU and Medical University of Innsbruck.
