Tbilisi State Medical University students participated in internships in the Internal Medicine Center of the Otto von Guericke University Hospital in Magdeburg (Germany)

Within the framework of Erasmus+ project, students of the Faculty of Medicine of Tbilisi State Medical University - Megi Kezua, Nika Togonidze and Sopho Mdinaradze participated in a two-month internship at the University Hospital of the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in the Internal Medicine Center. Megi Kezua and Nika Togonidze underwent their internships in the Departments of Hypertension, Endocrinology and Nephrology, while Sopho Mdinaradze interned in the Departments of Cardiology and Angiology.

The students noted, the practical experience gained in Germany was particularly productive. Over the course of two months, they became familiar with different medical practices, modern approaches in a foreign healthcare system, and further developed their clinical skills.

"Each detail in the clinic was explained to us with great attention. The German doctors were actively involved in our development process and were always ready to share their clinical experience with us.

Nephrology has always been an area of my interest. The time spent here proved my decision that this is the field I truly want to pursue. I believe it is one of the most diverse specialties, requiring doctors to work intensively with the patients.

"Finally, I gained extensive knowledge and insight into different medical practices. Interacting with patients and doctors in a foreign language provided me with invaluable experience. I also improved my German language skills and further developed my clinical competencies," noted TSMU student Megi Kezua.

“We had a very busy schedule, with the workday starting at 8 AM. Alongside the doctors, we conducted patient rounds and discussed their cases. We performed medical procedures such as kidney biopsies and bone marrow punctures under the supervision of the doctors. I found working with patients who had endocrine disorders particularly interesting. I can confidently say that I gained diverse experience in the field of internal medicine," stated TSMU student Nika Togonidze.

"I had an internship in the Department of Cardiology and Angiology. Each morning began with a round. Subsequently, a conference was scheduled where doctors discussed complex and challenging cases. Following this, a physician delivered a presentation on various cardiovascular diseases and new treatment methods.

Throughout the day, I attended several pericardiocentesis procedures and frequently observed the processes of stenting and ablations. Additionally, I monitored cardiovascular surgical operations.

In the aforementioned clinic, everything is conducted using the latest methods in interventional cardiology, which was very interesting for me. At any moment, I had the opportunity to ask questions to the doctors and receive comprehensive answers" said Sophio Mdinaradze, a student of Tbilisi State Medical University.

The TSMU students noted, knowledge of the language of the host country is essential when deciding to undergo an internship abroad. Therefore, their recommendation is for interested individuals to improve their foreign language proficiency on a daily basis, both in terms of communication and in specialized fields.
