On November 11, 2024, in celebration of International Science Day, Tbilisi State Medical University hosted a public lecture "The Application of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine."
The lecture was delivered by Professor Gaiane Simonia, Head of the Faculty Development and Strategic Planning Department. Professor discussed the history of artificial intelligence, its operational specifics, strengths and weaknesses, current programs in the field and its potential applications in various areas of education and medicine.
Technological advancements have significantly increased the accessibility of technical and software tools necessary for developing AI-based services. The term "artificial intelligence" was first introduced in 1955 by American scientist John McCarthy, who defined it as a program or computer capable of thinking like a human and making logical decisions. As we continue to better understand how the human brain functions and the mechanisms of thought, the capabilities and skills of artificial intelligence continue to advance. Yet, how far can we truly develop AI? Is there a limit? Can these achievements be solely beneficial to humanity?
These are some of the most frequently asked questions in discussions on AI capabilities and clear answers remain elusive. What is evident, however, is that AI's potential is becoming increasingly boundless, and it has already profoundly transformed our daily lives across nearly every field.
