• What should we know to save a life?
• How should we act when someone is unconscious?
• What do we do if the heart stops?
Participants of the Primary Emergency Care Workshop – “Medical Simulation Masterclass”, organized at Tbilisi State Medical University, received both theoretical knowledge and practical training to answer these critical questions. The masterclass, aimed at enhancing life-saving skills and developing practical competencies, was conducted in two main stages:
Stage I – Simulation-Based Learning
Five-member teams were introduced to situational scenarios. Based on these specific clinical tasks, trainers instructed participants on how to manage patients under various emergency conditions. In addition to the theoretical instruction, participants practiced key emergency medical techniques. During this stage, students made decisions in conditions designed to closely replicate real-life situations. Following the simulation training, a theoretical quiz was conducted to assess knowledge in essential areas such as:
• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• Trauma management and cervical spine immobilization
• Use of improvised tourniquets
• Performing the Heimlich maneuver (for both adults and children)
Stage II – Practical Competition
After mastering emergency response techniques, teams tested their skills in practice. Participants competed in terms of accuracy and speed in responding to various simulated medical emergencies.
Each team was evaluated by trainers based on the quality of their practical performance. The top-performing teams, comprising both Georgian- and English-language program students, were awarded prizes at the conclusion of the masterclass.
The workshop was organized with the support of the TSMU Clinical Skills and Multidisciplinary Simulation Center, and coordinated by the Student Simulation Club, the Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society TSMU Branch, and the I. Tarkhnishvili Student Scientific Society.
