On September 23, 2024 a solemn event dedicated to the beginning of a new 2024-2025 academic year was organized at Tbilisi State Medical University. Rector of TSMU, chancellor, deans of the faculties and university professors congratulated the first semester students on the beginning of the new academic year. The solemn event was also attended by representatives of legislative and executive authorities of the Georgian Government: Mr. Archil Talakvadze Deputy Chairperson of the Parliament, Mr.Vladimir Kakhadze, the First Deputy Chairperson of the Health Care and Social Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, Mr. Nodar Papukashvili, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Ms. Tamar Gabunia, First Deputy Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, Ms. Tea Giorgadze, Deputy Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, Professor Gordon Chuchvord, Assistant Dean of Emory University School of Medicine (USA), Professor Mauro Labanca, the University of Milan (Italy) and TSMU Associate Professor Zurab Kakabadze, President of the Georgian Sports Medicine Association and Chief Physician of the Georgian Olympic Team.
In his speech, the Rector of Tbilisi State Medical University wished the students a successful academic year.
"Dear first-year students, today is the beginning of a new and very important stage in your lives, as you are starting a journey toward mastering the profession you have chosen. Congratulations on becoming students of Tbilisi State Medical University. As the Rector and Professor of this university, I would like to thank you for choosing our institution.
Tbilisi State Medical University is the most powerful and best center of medical education in Georgia, with a rich tradition and staffed with the best academic personnel. Tbilisi State Medical University is a constantly developing institution, with its primary goal being oriented on ensuring high-quality education and teaching. The main mission of our university is to create and disseminate new knowledge in medical education. You, our students, are the recipients of this knowledge. Thus, there are no two sides in this matter – we are one, we are partners, and our partnership aims to prepare highly qualified medical professionals. I want you to remember this and know that your university, along with its academic, administrative, and support staff, will always be your supporter and pillar. Professor Tinatin Tkemaladze, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Nana Kipiani, Dean of the Faculty of Stomatology, Assoc. Prof. Tamar Chikviladze, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Professor Shalva (David) Zarnadze, Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, Professor Lela Maskhulia, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Medea Jgharkava, Coordinator of Nursing and Midwifery Bachelor's Programmes of TSMU greeted the newcomers.
TSMU awarded top ten first semester students according to the results of the National Assessment and Examinations Center with memorable gifts. Lazare Babunashvili, the top-ranking student was awarded with a special gift – laptop by the rector of TSMU. A particularly emotional moment was the surprise prepared by the Public Relations Service of Tbilisi State Medical University—a video about the success of Lazare Babunashvili. At the end of the event, the Tbilisi State Medical University band performed a musical composition, followed by the playing of the national anthem of Georgia.
