Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology was opened at TSMU

On May 25, 2023 Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology was opened on the basis of the Forensic Medicine Department of TSMU. The opening ceremony was attended by the TSMU administration and representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC): Jacqueline Rodriguez Gonzalez, Regional Coordinator for Forensic Anthropology in Georgia, Andres Patino Umana, Forensic Expert and Paul Douglas Emanovsky, Forensic Expert.

The guests also visited the museum of the Department of Clinical Anatomy and Operational Surgery and the laboratories of the Department of Pathological Anatomy of TSMU.  

One of the ongoing projects of the laboratory is the Georgian Recovery, Documentation and Identification Project (GRDIP). The aim of the project is to identify victims of the Soviet era in Adjara in the 1930s. The project is supported in cooperation with the Georgian Association of Forensic Anthropology, Texas State University (USA), Michigan State University (USA), Teesside University (UK), Department of Forensic Genetics of the Pomeranian Medical University (Poland).

Foundation of the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology is crucially important for the development of forensic anthropological studies in Georgia.
