Scientific Skills Center is involved in the main study program for the faculties of medicine, dentistry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and pharmacy.
The activities and functions of the Center for Scientific Skills are derived from the competence of basic medical education in the Bologna Process, which, in turn, is based on the learning outcomes developed by TUNING / MEDINE in accordance with the European Qualifications Framework. In curriculum, it is necessary to have at least 10 credits in scientific skills during six years of study.
The main objectives of scientific skills center are:
- To provide student with the ability to learn and practice scientific principles of biomedicine, methods and knowledge in which students can clearly formulate the tasks, agree with group members, coordinate their activities and adequate assessment of group members' abilities;
- Development of critical analysis of research, incomplete and contradictory data analysis, research planning and conducting, interpretation of research results and the use of evidence-based principles;
- Development of the ability to observe, concentrate, query, and additionally nonverbal communication skills;
- Strengthen the full spectrum of studying, communication and informational resources, management of their own learning process and time, selection of priorities, timeframe protection and the ability to fulfill agreed work;
- In addition, the ability to obtain, process, critical evaluation of information from various resources and the skills of continuous renewal of knowledge;
- In the context of medicine, to develop student’s ability to learn the ethical and legal principles, the International Experimental Animal Protection (according to the Helsinki International Provisions) in the context of medicine, and possess the laws of bioethics.
Ethics Committee for Research on Animals at Tbilisi State Medical University
The Ethics Committee for Research on Animals at Tbilisi State Medical University was established in 2012, and the head of the department is Ketevan Gambashidze, Associate Professor of pathophysiology department of TSMU.
The Committee consists of 16 members approved by the TSMU Academic Board (the Center for Study of the Academic Personnel, the invited teacher, veterinary, lawyer, scientific skills training center, Vladimer Bakhutashvili Biotechnology Institute of TSMU, Iovel Kutateladze Pharmacochemistry institute of TSMU, Representative of Students' Scientific Society of TSMU).
The objective of the research ethics committee on the animals at TSMU is to ensure compliance with internationally recognized ethical norms of biomedical studies on laboratory animals in the university through evaluation of research plan and methodology.
The Committee issues a written and electronic application on the request of the ethical assessment of the Biomedical Research Plan and the application form filled by the researcher, which contains information about the qualifications and position of the research, research purpose, the need of animal experiments, scientific substantiation of animal selection and applied methods, experimental duration, expected risks and others. In case of need, the Committee requests additional information, which is necessary for the ethical evaluation and decision making of the research project.
All the conclusions and resolutions prepared by the Committee Members and Reviewers/ Experts are reviewed and approved at the session of the Ethics Committee on the animals of TSMU.
The researcher is given extract from the protocol as requested where the results of the review plan and the committee's conclusion are indicated.
In the case of doctoral research, as a program (after it is positively evaluated by the Quality Assurance Service), also, its electronic version and application forms filled out by the program manager is transferred to the Committee from the Coordination, Master's and Doctoral Office of Scientific Work.
In case of grant project or any other experimental research, together with the research project, filled application forms and their electronic versions, a statement on the name of the chairman of the research ethics committee of animals at TSMU has to be submitted to assess the project.
